Note that the assignments feature is optional. Assignments will only show up in your zyBook if your instructor has chosen to use this feature.
What is an assignment?
Instructors have the ability to create assignments that require students to complete certain activities before a specified due date.
For example, the assignment below, “Week 7”, requires students to complete participation and challenge activities from sections 7.1 to 7.13 to be completed before the specified due date, 11/01/2024.
Assignments can contain participation activities, challenge activities, lab activities, or a combination of any of the three.
Students can begin working on an assignment by clicking on one of the sections in the assignment and completing the activities in that section.
How is the assignment scored?
We always collect all activity data that a student completes for any activity at any time.
When an activity is part of an assignment, activity completion data for that activity is counted towards that assignment score up until the due date. After the due date has passed, we will still collect activity data, but we will not apply the scores towards the assignment.
If an instructor changes an assignment's due date or grants a student an extension, the activity scores will be updated to reflect all activity completed by the new due date (whether the new due date is earlier or later). Only instructors have the ability to update assignment due dates or grant extensions.
How can I check my progress?
As a student completes activities within an assignment, they will be able to view their assignment score in two places.
One of these places is the assignments tab on the homepage of the zyBook.
As the student works through the activities, their score will increase.
The other place for a student to check their score is at the bottom of each section in the assignment.
How do I submit an assignment?
Some assignments may have a submit button. This indicates that the instructor has connected the zyBook to their learning management system (Blackboard/Canvas/Moodle/Brightspace/D2L).
Connecting the assignment is optional. If a submit button is not present, then the assignment most likely has not connected and instead the instructor will download and upload grades manually. This means there is no extra work for the student, once the assignment is completed, the instructor will be able to view the student's score.
If assignments are connected, students will need to activate each assignment in the learning management system and then submit the assignments. The following articles walk through how to activate and submit an assignment for the top 4 LMS's that are used.
