A zyBook provides standard text and figures, but also combines the power of interactive tools, responsive questions, and animations to provide students with a rich learning experience. We measure accessibility according to the standards set by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 A/AA, Revised Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act, and EN 301 549.
We fully support customers without hearing, with limited hearing, without speech, with limited reach and strength, with no/limited vocal capability, and those prone to photosensitive seizure triggers. We partially support customers without vision; without perception of color; and with limited language, cognitive, and learning disabilities.
Key product accessibility features include (but are not limited to):
- Alternative text for static images that serve a pedagogical purpose.
- Static, text-based alternatives for animations when Accessibility Mode is turned on.
- Functionality that can be operated using a single pointer; all pointer event interaction and can be cancelled.
- Ensuring that the default language of all pages can be programmatically determined.
- Captions for all prerecorded content within synchronized media.
- Ensuring that no user interface component initiates a change of context when it receives focus.
- Instructions for understanding and operating content without relying solely on sensory characteristics of components.
- Product pages that can be quickly navigated by heading.
- Math content that is rendered via MathJax, resulting in the generation of various math markup languages, including MathML.
To further assist students with disabilities, zyBooks also offers an Accessibility Mode toggle, that when enabled, results in:
- Increased color contrast of elements that convey meaning
- Replacement of drag-and-drop activities with multiple choice questions
- Replacement of coding windows with plain text windows
